There is no Nationalism in Defending Animal Rights!

There is no Nationalism in Defending Animal Rights!

The biggest union in which the notions of language, religion, race and nationality are not taken into account and in which everybody allies for one combat is the union of animal rights defenders.

Our animal rights defender friends who are combating consciously for this matter are without prejudice towards each other. They all have one and only goal; is to obey the rules declared within the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights, adopted by the United Nations and also warn those who do not comply with it. Since "existing" and to "breath" is already a legal right.

Animals are not assets, goods but they are living creatures.

In other words, a German who combats to defend animal rights is more important for us than a Turk who abuses animals. Or a Brazilian peasant who defends the animal rights is more eligible to us than a Turkish mayor who keeps poisoning the animals.

Since the animal rights defenders are united for a unique goal, which is to prevent the animals being abused or tortured by people and to defend their right to live with us in this world. Because this world belongs to all of us. That’s why a lot of animal rights defenders, no matter what nationality he is, are against zoos, circuses, furs, pet shops which have turned into animal abuse centers and they’re also against governments which do not include these to their programs. We fight hand in hand for this and we never insult people for their nationality or their religion.

However, those who do not love animals or those who don’t want to understand us, mostly tend to mold public opinion implying “they shall save their own animals first, and then they can help us”, in order to create disconnection and contradiction among us.

For instance , if a Spanish animal lover helps an animal in our country, it’s very absurd to say that he must save the bulls in his own country first before helping other countries. Or when a Canadian animal lover rises against the skinning out of dogs to be furs in China, it is ridiculous to say that he must  protect the seals of his own country first before giving hand to other countries.

In an animal rights struggle, the Canadian, the Chinese, the Turk, the English, the Italian do not have these prejudices. If it’s necessary, he will set his heart to this struggle for correcting also his own county’s system with his international friends and associations and create pressure on their own governments' and administrative authorities'.

It is true that where there are people , there will  always be animal abuse and torture.

However , there are no country borders for the animals. People shall not be accused for the wrong politics adopted by their states. Just like that we, the animal rights defenders shall not be accused for our municipalities who poison our animals every summer or lock them into small rooms called “shelters”. Also, the fact that we cooperate with the rest of the world to warn these municipalities doesn’t mean that we are against our nation or that we don’t love our country. A Canadian animal lover does feel bad as we do when the seals are being killed, a Japanese animal lover does feel depressed as a Turkish animal lover would do when dolphins are being slaughtered or being sold to external markets to be a circus animal.

It is wrong to attach this struggle to any nation, race, religion or language. In this combat to innovate the legislations of our countries, we take support from and give support to these international friends, without prejudice. Nobody looks to the other one’s religion, language or nation while saving the elephants in Africa or while escaping the bears from the slaughter camps in China or while opening secretly the cages of minks caught for their fur. The joy is in different languages, but the tears are all in the same language.

In fact , the real fight  is done  against the egocentric undeveloped wild human who considers animals as enemies, who wants to keep seeing them as a “commodity”.

The biggest union in the world will be established then.

Meows and Woofs Translate to Votes

Meows and Woofs Translate to Votes

"We will not vote for politicians who do not recognize and protect animals’ rights to live," Çıtırık said, adding that members of the group have visited the current mayors during the campaign and made presentations to them. Although their campaign has drawn attention, it is not enough, she said. "Our primary goal is to have all candidates to sign the covenant."

"We still cannot free ourselves from the culture of shooting, poisoning and killing stray and needy animals," Çıtırık said.

"The municipalities still poison animals mercilessly in metropolises and leave them for dead. The animals at municipal shelters are hungry and thirsty. There is no shortage of mountains, forests and plains in this world, but they are stuck in spaces measured by square meters. The animals are living in high security prison conditions in these shelters. The savagery there does not match our society’s virtues and traditions."

The mistreatmeht of animals became an especially important issue in Istanbul after it was discovered that a few city pounds were providing subpar treatment. Even better pounds were found to be engaging in mistreatment with the worst offenders starving and grievously endangering animal lives. Most stray animals in the cities get by with the help of neighborhood animal lovers who take care to feed street cats and dogs. Many vet clinics in such areas will also provide free or reduced cost services to stray animals brought in by caring strangers.

The ’I give my word covenant’ is a public campaign demanding promises from mayoral candidates to care for the rights of animals and take their well being into consideration. Animal rights foundations say they will not vote for candidates who do not sign their pledge. Roughly 200 candidates have signed on to the pledge

Animal-rights groups are demanding a promise from mayoral candidates that they will care for the rights of animals, saying, "Animal lovers will never vote for candidates who did not sign our covenant."

Prepared by the Animal Rights Federation, or HAYTAP, the document, known as the "I give my word covenant," has been signed by almost 200 politicians running in the March 29 local elections.

Speaking with the Anatolian news agency, Nesrin Çıtırık, an acting board member of HAYTAP and general secretary of the Foundation for Protection of Nature and Animals, or DOHAYKO, said the group’s campaign of "No votes for politicians who disregard animals" is finding success nationwide.

Voting issue

The duties of protecting, caring for and controlling stray or sick animals have been assigned to local governments under the control of the governorships by the law for the protection of animals, Çıtırık said, but added that the local governments do not handle this duty well enough.

Çıtırık said the candidates for local government speak only about projects like roads, sidewalks and water infrastructure. "They make many promises to people during the campaigns, but no candidate cares about animals, which are also in everyday life, because these mute, needy creatures do not have the right to vote." That is why, Çıtarak said, HAYTAP came up with the slogan, "They do not have the right to vote, but we do."

Do Not Take My Loneliness

Do Not Take My Loneliness

We have been observing that the most studies done so far in order to enhance the animal rights movements and to make them go up to a higher class in Turkey, bring about solutions that are individual, isolated and even peculiar to themselves, only.

(*) What Must Be The Duties of An Animal Protection Society?

(*) What Must Be The Duties of An Animal Protection Society?
Up until now, animal protection societies are (mis)perceived as organizations for misbehavior denouncement and local facilities to abandon pets freely. However, we all know that in Turkey animal protection societies are always in a tough situation, both in terms of finance and qualified workforce. Economic difficulties, crises that became routine, shallow point of view on animal rights, inability of society managers to suppress their own egos and become a slave to it has proved in time to all of us that most such societies are in a worse shape and more pathetic than a stray animal!

How long torturing animals will continue to be aceepted merely as a misdemeanaur instead of crime ?

How long torturing animals will continue to be aceepted merely as a misdemeanaur instead of crime ?

The justification of the Law of Misdemeanor  defines what we call faults as administrative crimes and that definition is used in several legal codes as well. Accordingly; crimes are classified either as legal or administrative in our legal system. Yet, in Turkey any kind of misbehavior towards animals is somehow taken as an administrative crime (Misdemeanor) over a long period of time.
